When I think back to my childhood, I remember riding my bike for miles and playing ball hockey until the streetlights came on. We spent hours outdoors without anyone telling us to. It was a freedom that many parents are now trying to recreate at home with a custom backyard court in Southern Ontario.

I'm surprised, looking back, that my parents would send me so far from home. To the grocery store blocks away, to friends' houses across town. Today? I would never let my kids roam that far from the house. It's just a different world now.

The streets feel busier. There are more cars parked everywhere. The old model of outdoor play (kids disappearing for hours, roaming freely, organizing their own games) is mostly gone. Most parents want their kids outside, but also close. Active, but within sight.

Screens are everywhere now, and we all know the challenge that creates. But in my ten years of installing custom backyard court projects across Southern Ontario and work across Canada, I've noticed something important. When you give kids a reason to go outside that actually appeals to them, they often choose it over their devices.

Not always. Not every time. But consistently enough that parents call me months after installation and say the same thing: "My kids are outside playing again."

The Backyard That Gets Forgotten

Here's what I hear from families all the time. The swing set gets outgrown, the grass sits empty, and nobody uses the backyard anymore. A nine-year-old isn't going to wander outside just to kick a ball around on the lawn. A twelve-year-old isn't naturally drawn to an empty yard.

And honestly, can we blame them?

Their phone offers instant entertainment. Friends are a text away. Games are engaging, social media is designed to capture attention, and there's always something new to watch or do. An empty backyard can't compete with that kind of stimulation. The backyard offers... grass. Maybe a tree. Not exactly compelling when you're competing with everything the internet has to offer.

But here's the thing. Kids aren't choosing screens because they don't want to be active. They're choosing screens because screens offer them something to do.

That's why simply telling kids to "go outside and play" doesn't work anymore. Outside needs to offer something worth their time. Something engaging. Something that pulls them away from the screen because they genuinely want to be there.

Give them a court? They're out there after school without being asked. They call friends over. They shoot around before dinner. The space transforms from unused to essential.

What strikes me most is that parents aren't forcing this. They're not saying "put down your phone and go play." The kids are choosing it because it's something they actually want to do.

Where Memories Are Made

One of my earliest installations was for a single mom with two boys. The court wasn't even that big. Maybe 20 feet wide and 28 feet long. Just enough for one-on-one and practicing shots.

Within weeks, she told me: "This is the best investment I ever made. My boys drop their bags when they get home from school and go straight outside. Their friends come over more often. I can stand in the kitchen and watch them play. I love it."

That conversation stays with me because it captures what these courts really do. They create space for families to connect naturally. No scheduling required, no organized activities. Just kids being kids, parents joining in when they want, and memories forming without anyone trying to manufacture them.

Personalized Perfection: A Gallery of Custom Logos

Every home is different and every family has their own style. Here is a sample of a few logos we have used to customize backyard courts in Southern Ontario.

The Impact We Don't Always See

Backyard courts often become the neighborhood hub. Friends come over. Parents of those friends stick around to chat on the deck while the kids play. Neighbors get to know each other a little better. It's not unlike how some houses naturally become the hangout spot because they have the best basement or the biggest rec room. The court serves the same function. It's a draw, a reason to gather, a space that brings people together.

We've even seen it work in rural communities where the nearest park or community center might be kilometers away. Families on larger lots with fewer nearby amenities create their own gathering place. The court becomes both a personal investment and a community asset.

But beyond the immediate social impact, there's something deeper happening that we don't always get to see. We leave families with big smiles after installation, but we don't see what happens months or years later.

I think about it often though. The six-year-old who gains confidence shooting on a lowered rim, then joins the school basketball team. The teenager who trains in their backyard and earns a university scholarship. The shy kid who builds self-esteem through repetition and practice, developing skills they carry far beyond the court.

We're not creating professional athletes (though that's certainly possible). We're giving kids a tool to build confidence, resilience, and physical literacy in a low-pressure environment. No tryouts, no cuts, no pressure to perform. Just a space to grow at their own pace. That matters more than any shot percentage.

Courts That Grow With You

One thing that's surprised me over the years is how these courts evolve with families. For a long time, our typical client was parents with young kids. The court was primarily for the children, though of course the parents would join in too.

Then pickleball exploded, and everything shifted.

Now we're getting calls from empty nesters, parents with grown kids, and households where the court is specifically for the adults. The market changed because pickleball is accessible, social, and genuinely fun across generations. We've even had clients call years after we installed their basketball court, asking if we can add pickleball lines.

The answer is always yes. That versatility matters because families change. Kids grow up, interests shift, new sports emerge. A court that can adapt means the investment keeps giving. The basketball court becomes a pickleball court. The space where teenagers trained becomes where parents stay active. The backyard that brought kids together now brings the whole family together in a different way.

Why This Work Matters to Me

I didn't start this business thinking about screen time or family connection. I saw an interesting product at a trade show and thought people might want backyard courts. That curiosity led me to a conference in Chicago, and Total Sport Solutions grew from there.

But over the years, I've come to understand the real value of what we install. It's not about the tiles or the lines or even the sports. It's about creating space where families naturally come together, where kids voluntarily put down their phones, and where memories form that will last decades.

I've seen clients move house and call us immediately to start a new project. One family has actually installed a custom backyard court in Southern Ontario in three different homes. That tells me that once you see what these spaces do for your family, you don't want to live without one.

An Investment That Keeps Giving

I don't believe in overselling. Some families won't use a backyard court enough to justify it. Some kids will try it once and lose interest.

But for many families, it becomes one of the best decisions they make. Not because it solves every problem or eliminates screen time entirely, but because it offers an alternative that kids actually choose.

When your teenager comes home from school and voluntarily goes outside to shoot around, that's a win. When your family spends a Saturday morning playing together without anyone suggesting it, that's a win. When the neighborhood kids start showing up at your house because that's where the fun is, that's a win.

Those moments add up to something meaningful. A childhood shaped by movement, connection, and time spent together. In a world that increasingly pulls us toward isolation and screens, that feels worth building.

Institutional and Commercial Customization

We also customize institutional and commercial gyms and courts. Whether it is a school, a community center, or a professional facility, we bring the same level of detail to every project.
